Background

Belcarra Community Centre has proven to be a very valuable amenity and is a hub of activity in the community.

The original Centre was built in 1971. It received the first ever Amenity Grant in Ireland of £2,500 from Mayo County Council. In 2002, for health and safety reasons, it had to undergo major refurbishment. All the community groups that regularly use the centre had an input into interior design and materials used during the refurbishment to ensure that all requirements were met.

Belcarra Community Council undertook a major task of fundraising €250,000 towards the cost of refurbishing the Centre. Through the community’s commitment the Belcarra local Community Lottery raised almost €100,000. In addition, we received grant funding of €165,000, which is gratefully acknowledged below:

  • Social and Economic Grant: Mayo County Council €90,000
  • South West Mayo Leader Co. €65,000
  • National Lottery Grant €10,000

The Official Opening of refurbished Belcarra Community Centre was held on Sunday 15th June 2003 at 4p.m. The Centre was blessed by Fr. Brendan Mc Guinness C.C.The official opening was performed by Mr. Tim Quinn, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council..
